Full Bio:
Kathryn Turpin is a senior corporate and transactional attorney with experience working with a spectrum of businesses from the small start-up company to the publicly-held corporation. She is licensed to practice law in both Texas and California, and she has handled a wide variety of commercial transactions, asset and stock acquisitions, real estate transactions and corporate governance and corporate relationship issues.
Prior to affiliating with Phillips & Reiter, Kathryn served as corporate counsel to Broadwing Communications, a national telecommunications broadband provider, providing contract analysis and negotiations, handling real estate transactions, working with all levels of employees to resolve commercial disputes, reviewing and negotiating software license and other IT agreements, and assisting with the maintenance and licensing of service marks.
Kathryn has also served as part-time general counsel for AntiqueLand USA, Inc., an Austin-based owner of retail antique malls throughout the United States. In addition to providing all the legal work for AntiqueLand's expansion into several states by the acquisition of existing businesses, Kathryn coordinated all matters relating to a significant corporate reorganization involving numerous entities in several states, provided advice and guidance on all corporate governance issues, served as the virtual head of human resources by handling all employment matters, handled all trademark registrations and maintenance, and handled all real estate leasing and subleasing issues, transactions and disputes.
Prior to moving back to Austin in 1997, Kathryn practiced law for several years in Los Angeles. While practicing in California, Kathryn worked at large law firms in downtown Los Angeles, focusing primarily on corporate securities matters and complex transactions for large private companies and publicly held companies. Kathryn left the private practice of law in Los Angeles to become Vice President of Legal Affairs for Frawley Corporation, a publicly-held corporation based in Los Angeles. As sole counsel, Kathryn was responsible for all legal matters relating to the company's assets, consisting of a small chain of hospitals, a significant amount of developed and undeveloped real estate, publications, and valuable trademarks in the publishing industry.
Kathryn was in the 2000-2001 class of Leadership Austin and remains an active member. Kathryn also serves as a member of the Board and the Treasurer of Rollingwood Community Development Corporation. Kathryn was previously a member and the President of the Board of Directors of Community Partnership, an Austin nonprofit organization that provides transitional housing for homeless veterans and affordable housing to low-income families. While in Los Angeles, Kathryn was a member of the Board of Directors of Ocean Park Community Center (OPCC), a nonprofit organization in Santa Monica that provides services to low-income and homeless individuals, and a charter member and officer of the Board of Directors of one of the projects of OPCC, Turning Point, a transitional housing shelter for homeless adults.
Kathryn received her J.D. from the University of Texas at Austin, and she is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Texas at Austin (B.A. in accounting with high honors).
